Being a Boy Mom: 10 Things I’ve Learned as a Mom to 4 Boys

While being a boy mom is such an adventure, being a mom to 4 boys… well, that’s a whole new level of adventure.

I didn’t have a clue about boys when I became a mom at 19 years old. Now, I’m 35 with 4 boys and what a wild ride it’s been!

My Life Consists of:

  • Superheroes and supervillains
  • Character underwear (character everything, actually)
  • Insane amounts of wrestling
  • Endless messes
  • Gross humor (ex: burps, farts, and their wild obsession with poop)
  • And lots and lots of “I love you’s”

There is never a dull moment with these boys of mine. And I have learned so much on this amazing journey of being a mom to 4 of them!

So much so, that I couldn’t possibly list them all. However, I’ve broken down 10 important things I’ve learned from being a mom to 4 boys.

1. I’ve Learned to Thrive in Chaos.

I’ll be honest, it can be complete and utter chaos around here, but somehow we have normalized it and have learned to thrive in the madness. Like “oh, you stained your brand new shirt? Cool, go check your brother’s closet for back up”.

And “you climbed up on the roof to get your brother’s frisbee? Hmm.. well, I’d rather you come get me next time, but I appreciate your kindness”.

It’s always something around here and I just have to go with the flow. Oh… and choose my battles.

2. They Never Slow Down.

These boys are 100 miles per hour from the moment they wake up until they go down for bed. And even then, they take a bit to wind down.

The constant running, jumping, climbing, and wrestling is a normal part of our everyday lives with boys.

I mean literally on the move from sun up to sun down- not just physically – but their minds are always going, as well.

And while they may be fun, these little balls of energy can definitely wear you out, and quick.

Over-stimulation is a real thing, and I believe it’s ESPECIALLY true with boy moms.

3. Boys Can Sleep Anywhere.

They will sleep on the floor and not think twice about it. Sleeping on the couch is a real treat for them. They prefer the couch over their comfy beds- or at least mine do.

Camping in a tent? No problem. They are STOKED to take on the challenge of sleeping on the ground.

4. They are Messy & Your Home will Never be Squeaky Clean (Stop Trying to Fight it).

I have had this thing where the shape of my home really affects my mood. And for years I have realized that it is something I am really going to have to work on. Because I can give my most valiant effort, but this house is never going to stay clean enough for my liking.

There will be messes daily.

  • Pee on the toilet
  • Laundry everywhere
  • Action figures and lego’s around the house
  • Popcorn kernels in the couch

… you name it.

If you are a boy parent then you are no stranger to your toilet seat having constant urine sprinkles. Especially after you clean it.

You’re no rookie at peeling underwear out of wet pants left on the bathroom floor.

We just roll with the punches when it comes to these not so luxuries moments of being a boy mom.

5. Wrestling is Their Love Language.

Boy mamas, how often have you been attacked by a super aggressive boy hug (ya know, the kind that almost knocks you down)? I have personally been victimized many times. I think they feel that the more aggressive the hug, the more emotion they are displaying. While it can be much sometimes, I still feel so lucky to get to be on the receiving end.

6. Boys will Turn Any Space Into a Playground.

Furniture is no longer furniture, but a never-ending space of possibilities. Blankets over the chairs from your dining room table= awesome blanket fort. They are constantly exploring the world around them, and they are likely to turn every day objects into items for play.

7. Not all Boys are Created Equal.

There is this stereotype surrounding the characteristics of boys, and while some of those may be likely, they aren’t necessarily true for every boy.

They are individuals with their own unique personalities, qualities, and interests. I think one of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming all boys are the same and they should fit this bubble.

It saddens me when I encounter people making generalizations about boys. It’s important to respect and appreciate their differences. I have 4 very different boys with very different personalities

Which brings me to my next point….

8. Boys Have Big Feelings, Too.

Is this a surprise to you? So often people think of girls as whiny and boys as the tough ones. But, let me real clear when I say that regardless of gender, we are all human and boys get whiny, too- maybe even exceptionally whiny at times.

They care more than they will admit. Some wear their emotions on their sleeves, while others may try to hide those emotions. But they are emotional beings, just like the rest of us, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

9. Pizza is Life.

It’s true. These boys will eat pizza over anything. And chicken nuggets might very well be right up there with it. It’s convenient, they can eat it with their hands, and it’s still good cold.

Pizza is a real treat for my boys. And I love it because on the days where I’m completely exhausted and I don’t feel like cooking, I can give them a pizza without feeling like a failure.

10. The Love They Have for Their Mom is Unmatched.

There is something to be said about a boy’s love for his mother. Lots and lots of “I love you’s”. And a compliment from their mom really boosts their self-esteem.

They are protectors and they are their mom’s biggest fan.

At the end of the day, even when I feel I haven’t been my best, they meet me with a sweet hug, and a “goodnight, Mama, I love you”.

I’ll never deserve them, but I’m so honored that God chose me to be the mama to these 4 amazing beings that I get to call my sons.
